Japan & Australia begin 2018 World Championship qualification campaigns with wins

 

Lausanne, Switzerlad, July 12, 2017 - Japan and hosts Australia began their quests for tickets to the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship with wins Wednesday in Canberra, moving one step closer to grabbing one of the two qualifying spots from Pool B of the Asian qualifiers.

Japan opened play in Canberra with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) sweep of Chinese Taipei and Australia followed up with a clear shutout of New Zealand 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-18).



The pool also features Thaialand, who enter play on Thursday against Australia. The game will be preceeded by Japan v New Zealand.

Pool A of the Asian qualifiers, with Iran, China, Korea, Qatar and Kazakhstan, will be held 10-14 August in Tehran for two more spots from Asia to Italy/Bulgaria.

Hosts Italy and Bulgaria and defending champions Poland have already been joined in the 2018 World Championship by France, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Russia, Serbia and Finland who all qualified last month through the second round of European qualifiers.
