Lausanne, Switzerland, August 8, 2017 - Brazil defeated Paraguay 3-0 (25-04, 25-14, 25-10) and Argentina were too strong for Uruguay 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-20) as both the top favourites set off on the right foot in their quest for the continental title at the 2017 Men's South American Championship in Chile and a ticket for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship.
The winner of the South American Championship gets one of the two berths available to South America at the 2018 World Championship, which will be jointly hosted by Italy and Bulgaria next year.
One more ticket from South America will be decided at the continental qualifiers, scheduled to start on August 31 in Argentina.
In other action on the opening day at the South American Championship, Venezuela edged Colombia 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 26-24) and hosts Chile shut out Peru 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-22).
Play continues Tuesday in the cities of Temuco and Santiago, with matches starting at 18.30 local time (22.30 GMT).

Hosts Italy and Bulgaria, defending champions Poland have direct tickets to the 2018 edition of the FIVB's flagship tournament. France, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Russia, Serbia, Finland, and Belgium from Europe plus Japan and Australia from Asia have already secured their berths through continental qualifiers.
