Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela alive in race for World Championship ticket

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 10, 2017 - Continental powerhouses Brazil and Argentina topped their pools and avoided each other in the semifinals, headed for a final showdown for the title of the 2017 Men's South American Championship in Chile and a ticket to the 2018 FIVB Volleyball World Championship.

Brazil shut out Venezuela 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-21) and will now face hosts Chile in Thursday's semifinals.



Argentina beat Chile 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22) to set up a semifinal against Venezuela.



In other action on the closing day of the South American Championship Venezuela beat Paraguay 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-14) and Uruguay upset Peru 3-2 (22-25, 27-25, 28-26, 20-25, 15-9).

The winner of the South American Championship gets one of the two berths available to South America at the 2018 World Championship, which will be jointly hosted by Italy and Bulgaria next year.

One more ticket from South America will be decided at the continental qualifiers, scheduled to start on August 31 in Argentina.

Play continues Thursday with semifinals starting at 18.30 local time (22.30 GMT) in Santiago. Classification matches for positions 5-8 of the South American Championship will be played in the city of Temuco.

All matches are available to watch live on the South American Confederation website, as are full results, standings and schedules.

Hosts Italy and Bulgaria, defending champions Poland have direct tickets to the FIVB's flagship tournament. France, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Russia, Serbia, Finland, and Belgium from Europe plus Japan and Australia from Asia have already secured their berths through continental qualifiers.
