Brazil, Argentina remain on track in World Championship qualifiers

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 9, 2017 - Three semifinals tickets have been booked a day before the end of pool play at the 2017 Men's South American Championship in Chile, after powerhouses Brazil and Argentina as well as hosts Chile scored their second wins in the competition which advances one team to the 2018 FIVB Men's World Championship.

Brazil defeated Venezuela 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-14) and Argentina shut out Peru 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 21-12) as both favourites of the tournament remained on a collision course towards Friday's final.



Chile also scored their second victory in as many games, downing Uruguay 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-19), while Colombia beat Paraguay 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17) in the other matches of the day.

The winner of the South American Championship gets one of the two berths available to South America at the 2018 World Championship, which will be jointly hosted by Italy and Bulgaria next year.

One more ticket from South America will be decided at the continental qualifiers, scheduled to start on August 31 in Argentina.

Play continues Wednesday in the cities of Temuco and Santiago, with matches starting at 18.30 local time (22.30 GMT).

All matches are available to watch live on the South American Confederation website, as are full results, standings and schedules.

Hosts Italy and Bulgaria, defending champions Poland have direct tickets to the FIVB's flagship tournament. France, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Russia, Serbia, Finland, and Belgium from Europe plus Japan and Australia from Asia have already secured their berths through continental qualifiers.
