Brazil hold winning edge on Egypt

 

Ruse, Bulgaria, August 29, 2018 - Brazil are counting on their 2-0 winning advantage over Egypt in the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship to start their 17th campaign on a positive note.

Head-to-Head

- Brazil have won both previous World Championship matches against Egypt in straight sets, in Clermont-Ferrand in 1986 and Córdoba in 2002.
- Both previous occasions Brazil and Egypt were drawn together in the World Championship came in the group stage (first round). Both times the Brazilians progressed to the next round while the Egyptians finished bottom and were eliminated (1986 and 2002).
- Brazil won all 11 world level major tournament matches versus Egypt in straight sets.
- The world level major tournaments are Nations League, Olympic Games, World Championship, World Cup, World League and Grand Champions Cup.
- Only Venezuela and Greece (both 15) have played more world level major tournament matches against Brazil and remain with a 100% losing record than Egypt (11). Both Venezuela and Greece have won sets versus the Brazilians in those defeats.

Brazil

- Brazil are one of four nations making their 17th appearance at a World Championship in the 2018 edition, with Czech Republic (including as Czechoslovakia), Italy and Poland. Only Russia (all 19, including as Soviet Union) and Bulgaria (18) have participated in the tournament more times (totals include 2018).
- Brazil have won the World Championship three times (2002, 2006, 2010). Russia (6, including as Soviet Union) and Italy (3) are the only other nations to have won the tournament on at least three occasions.
- Brazil lost 3-1 against host nation Poland in the final of the 2014 World Championship, preventing them from becoming the first nation to win four consecutive editions of the tournament.
- Brazil have won their opening match at each of the last 11 editions of the World Championship, with nine of those victories in straight sets.
- The only previous occasion the World Championship was hosted by Bulgaria was also the last time Brazil lost their opening fixture at the tournament, 3-1 versus Czechoslovakia in Yambol.

Egypt

- This is Egypt's ninth appearance at the World Championship, a joint-record for a CAVB nation with Tunisia who are also participating for the ninth time in 2018.
- Egypt's best performance at the World Championship was 13th in 2010.
- Egypt lost all five matches at the 2014 World Championship, with both of their final two fixtures going to a deciding set.
- Egypt won the opening set in only one of their five fixtures at the 2014 World Championship, a 3-2 defeat against Mexico in their final match of the tournament.
- Egypt's most recent win at the World Championship was in their opening match of the 2010 tournament, a straight-set victory versus Iran.
