China look to beat Brazil for first time in 40 years

 

Ruse, Bulgara, September 18, 2018 - China are 4-2 head-to-head over Brazil in the history of the World Championship, but the Asians' last win was 40 years ago, in 1978. Brazil are already qualified to the 2nd Round of the 2018 FIVB World Championship, while China are alrfeady eliminated.

Head-to-Head
• China won each of their first four World Championship matches versus Brazil (1956, 1962, 1966, 1978), but have lost both of their most recent two matches against them at the tournament (1986, 2014).
• The only World Championship match between China and Brazil to be decided in straight sets was the most recent fixture between the nations at the tournament. The Brazilians were victorious 3-0 in Katowice in 2014.
• China won each of their first five world level major tournament matches versus Brazil (1956-1978), but have lost all 12 world level major tournament fixtures against them since (1981-2018).
• The world level major tournaments are Nations League, Olympic Games, World Championship, World Cup, World League and Grand Champions Cup.
• Of Brazil's 12 world level major tournament victories against China, seven were in straight sets. Only two of the 12 went to a deciding set - in Nagano in the 2005 Grand Champions Cup and in Kumamoto in the 2011 World Cup.
• The only world level major tournament match between China and Brazil since the 2014 World Championship was on 10 June 2018 in the Nations League. The Brazilians won in straight sets in Ufa.

China
• China have lost their first four matches at the 2018 World Championship: 3-0 against France and 3-1 against Netherlands, Canada and Egypt.
• China have lost their first four matches of a World Championship for the first time ever.
• They could lose five matches in a row for the second time this century. They lost five straight in 2014, all in three sets, including one against Brazil.
• Chuan Jiang, China's top scorer at this World Championship, has scored 77 total points.

Brazil
• Brazil have won three matches and lost one at the 2018 World Championship.
• Brazil have won only one of their first four matches in straight sets. In all nine World Championships since 1978 (when they had one 3-0 in the first four), they had at least two straight-set wins at this point.
• Brazil could lose two of their first five World Championship matches for the first time since 2010, when they eventually became world champions.
• Wallace De Souza (66 points) leads Brazil in scoring at this World Championship. He scored 24 points in Brazil's 3-1 win over Canada on Monday.
