Flying Dutchmen! The Netherlands eliminate Egypt and top Pool B

 

Ruse, Bulgaria, September 17, 2018 - The Netherlands continued with the outstanding performance at the 2018 FIVB World Championship and achieved their fourth consecutive win in “Arena Monbat”! The Hollands beat Egypt 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) and topped the standings in Pool B with 11 points! Egyptians fourth lost eliminated them from the tournament. 


The match was attended by the FIVB Vice President Aleksandar Boricic, the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation President Dancho Lazarov and the Major of Ruse Plamen Stoilov.  

The Netherlands started the match with great confidence and won the opening set by 25-18. Jeroen Rauwerdink topped the Dutch list of scorers with 8 points in this game period! 

The Hollands continued to play pretty well in attack and after another great spike by Wouter Ter Maat they won the second set by 25-21.  

Despite the difficult start, Egypt stabilized their performance and took a huge 4-point advantage by 23-19. Gijs Jorna surprised the Egyptian receivers with a clever float serving and the Netherlands made an amazing comeback (23-23). A few minutes later Wouter Ter Maat spiked in the net and Mohamed Moselhy Ibrahim’s players won the set by 25-23.  

The Egyptians started the fourth set better but point by point the Hollands took the control on the field and achieved a fourth consecutive win in Pool B after 25-16. 

Wouter Ter Maat was a top scorer in the match with 26 points. For Egypt Hisham Ewais finished with 19.  

This is the second Dutch victory against Egypt in the World Championship history. The only previous match between these two teams at this major volleyball event was in Venice in 1978 where the Hollands beat by 3-0.
