Perfect straight-set start for Brazil at the World Championship

 

Ruse, Bulgaria, September 12, 2018 - Brazil started the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship with a perfect straight-set win against Egypt 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) in the last match of the day in Pool B. 


Wallace De Souza and Douglas Costa were the top scorers for the winners with 12 points each. For Egypt Ahmed Abdelhay finished with 13. A cannonry of aces by Lucas Saatkamp, Carlos Eduardo Barreto Silva, Isac Santos and the captain Bruno Rezende put the current Olympic champions 10 points ahead in the opening set (22-12). 

Egypt tried to come back at the end of the set but the players coached by Mohamed Moselhy Ibrahim made too many easy mistakes and ended up losing it by 17-25. Despite the tough start of the match, Egypt stabilized reception and took a two-point advantage at 9-7 in the second set. 

In the next minutes both teams played point-by-point until the moment when Ahmed Shafik made an unforced error in attack and Brazil was two points ahead at 20-18. In the last minutes of the second set Wallace stole the show demonstrating great skills in defense and led the Brazilians to 25-22. 

In the third set Ahmed Shafik stopped Wallace with a huge single block to make the result 15-13, but a few minutes later Douglas Souza scored an ace and led by Wallace, who was unstoppable in attack, Brazil won the match after 25-20.
