Poland and Belgium meet twice in week before World Championship

 

Szczecin, Poland, September 5, 2018 - Reigning world champions Poland are putting the final touches to their preparations ahead of the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship in Italy and Bulgaria with two matches against Belgium this week. Coach Vital Heynen's men won the first of the two encounters on Tuesday in four sets 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-22). The two teams meet again on Wednesday.

Poland 's win against Belgium follows victories against Canada, France and Russia at the Wagner Memorial tournament just over a week ago. They finished fifth at the inaugural edition of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League earlier this year and will look to build on that result when they begin their World Championship campaign against Cuba on Wednesday, September 12. They will then take on Puerto Rico, Finland, Iran and co-hosts Bulgaria in First Round Pool D in Varna, Bulgaria.

Belgium's preparations have also included recent friendlies against Bulgaria and the Netherlands. Coach Andrea Anastasi's men also begin the World Championship next Wednesday but in Pool A in Florence, Italy against Argentina. They then take on co-hosts Italy, Slovenia, Japan and the Dominican Republic.

The 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship begins on Sunday with Italy taking on Japan in Rome and Bulgaria playing Finland in Varna. Both matches start at 19.30 local time/17.30 GMT.
