Slovenia up against Belgium in quest for 3/3


Florence, Italy, September 15, 2018 - Slovenia (2-0) are out to score their third win of the 2018 FIVB World Championship, when they meet Belgium (1-1). With Slovenia enjoying their World Championship debut this year, it's the first time the two go head-to-head in the history of the competition.

• Belgium and Slovenia will play each other for the first time in a world level major tournament match.
• The world level major tournaments are Olympic Games, World Championship, World Cup, World League, Grand Champions Cup and Nations League.
• Belgium beat Slovenia 3-1 in Varna in the group stage of the 2015 European Championship. Despite the defeat the Slovenians went on to be runners-up of the tournament, while the Belgians were eliminated in the qualification match for the quarterfinal.

• Belgium started their 2018 World Championship with a 3-1 win against Argentina and a 3-0 defeat against co-hosts Italy.
• Belgium could win two of their first three matches at a World Championship for the third time, after 1970 and 1974. In 1970, they won their first and third fixture, while in 1974 Belgium won their first two.
• Belgium could lose their 50th World Championship match. They are on 19 wins and 49 defeats so far.
• Sam Deroo is Belgium's most prolific scorer at the 2018 World Championship with 28 total points.

• Slovenia, the only debutants at this World Championship, started their World Championship with two wins. They defeated both the Dominican Republic and Japan 3-1.
• Slovenia have now won eight world level major tournament matches in a row, their longest winning streak ever.
• Slovenia have played 21 total matches in world level major tournaments. They lost only two, against Greece in the 2016 World League (3-1) and against Japan in the 2017 World League (3-2).
• Tine Urnaut (37 points) and Mitja Gasperini (29) are Slovenia's top scorers after two matches at the 2018 World Championship.
