Florence, Italy, September 16, 2018 – The organisers of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Florence involved the national teams of Italy and Argentina in a special action to commemorate 100 years since the birth of South Africa’s former leader Nelson Mandela. The stadium where the matches of Pool A are currently taking place bears the name of the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Before Italy and Argentina took to the court on Saturday night at Mandela Forum, their respective team captains – Ivan Zaytsev and Luciano De Cecco – received a special t-shirt designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary since Mandela’s birth.
The ceremony involved the president of the local Organising Committee, Mr Elio Sità, as well as the president of the Nelson Mandela Forum Association, Mr Massimo Gramigni.
Italy came back from one set down to edge Argentina 3-1, thus keeping a clean record in the pool with three wins in as many matches this far.
