Bari, Italy, August 29, 2018 - The United States and Serbia are set to meet in their fifth World Championship match, after claiming two victories each in previous editions.
Head-to-Head
- For the fifth time, United States and Serbia (incl. predecessors) meet at the World Championship.
- Both teams claimed two victories over the other. United States proved too strong in 1956 (3-0) and 2014 (3-1), while Serbia were victorious in 1998 (3-0) and 2002 (3-1).
- The most recent world level major competition meeting between these teams came at the 2018 Nations League on 15 June. United States beat Serbia 3-0.
- World level major competitions are: World Championships, Olympic Games, World Cup, World League, Grand Champions Cup and the Nations League.
United States
- United States are in search of their second world title. They won the tournament in 1986 in France.
- United States also claimed one bronze medal, as they finished third in 1994.
- Since that bronze medal in 1994, USA's best result has been a sixth place finish in 2010.
- USA ended their 2014 World Championship campaign with a 3-2 defeat versus Argentina in the second round. They have not lost successive World Championship matches since the 2006 second round group stage, when they were beaten by Brazil (3-0) and France (3-2).
Serbia
- Serbia (incl. predecessors) are hoping to win their first world title and complete the World Championship medal set.
- Serbia previously won the silver medal in 1998 and the bronze medal in 2010.
- At the 2014 World Championship, Serbia finished in ninth place, their worst result since finishing 10th as Yugoslavia in 1970.
- Serbia have lost their last three World Championship matches. They can now lose four in a row since a run of six defeats in 1966.
